BESPOKE FRAMING

At Hatch Space our aim is to work with our clients to produce the best frame design to enhance the artwork without taking anything away from the work itself. Our stance is that simplicity of design combined with quality of craftsmanship and materials creates the best result. We are a small framing studio and therefore able offer a high quality framing service at an affordable price.

We offer conservation standard framing as a standard on all our frames and can also quote for a higher quality museum standard finishing if you wish.

WOOD

We offer an extensive range of solid wood mouldings that are glued, pinned, filled, hand-sanded, stained or painted and then finished with a wax or oil. We use Tulip, Oak and Sapele as standard but also use Ash, Beech, Maple and Walnut with certain profiles. This combined with our extensive range of finishes creates a high-quality product.

We also stock a range of prefinished mouldings in a small selection of colours and profiles. View our Project Gallery to view some previous frames.

HAND FINISHING

With 100+ plain wood frame profiles and 60+ hand finishing options we have thousands of framing options to find the right fit for your artwork.

Our options for hand finishing include a range of stains, oils and waxes that help accentuate the woods we use. We also offer a range of painted finishes using Farrow & Ball, Crown and Craig & Rose paints. These come in solid colour range, washes, metallic finish and a range of distressed, faux and bespoke colour finishes.

STAINED WOOD

We primarily use oak for staining as it provides great depth within its grain. Darker stains come out best, in my opinion, but certain artworks will match a lighter stain at times. We have around 10 different stain colours ranging from light to dark.

Tulip wood has a tighter grain and subsequently has a much more even stain with less contrast. Each wood stains in a different way. Again, the subtlety will help compliment different elements within different artwork.

LIME WAX

Using a white lime wax on wood frames, especially tulip and beech, offers a subtle finish that shows off the soft grain of these slightly less dense woods. The wax still lets the grain show through, offering a complimentary amount of texture. It can be used when a white painted frame might be too stark.

BLACK AND WHITE

Painted black and white frames can offer a more graphic, traditional style to your artwork. At Hatch we feel a painted frame gives a softness to the frame as the textures of the wood and brush marks aren’t quite as harsh as a sprayed or pre-finished black. White works really well with photography as it gives a clean, light compliment to the gloss and reflective quality of photgraphic paper, with black working well with black and white photography. Both black and white frames are universal in their appeal.

PAINTED FRAMES

We have a wide range of colours to play with. We have tried out best to choose colours that offer the best range for the the types of artworks that come in. Some colours are subtle and others are vibrant and garish and every now an again that is what is required. Colour combined with the right frame profile can really make the difference for artwork with bold and bright colours.

COLOUR MATCHING

Alongside our range of paint colours we offer a matching service where we can match colours to certain shades within the artwork. This can often be the most vibrant colour but can also be a more subtle tone that runs through the artwork creating a more balanced and harmonious tone between the frame and artwork.

We can also paint the spacers that run between the glass and artwork/mount. This can add an element of dynamism to the overall look.
